The beautiful Japanese tea cup with a little tray with soft pink flower drawing is crafted in Kutani, Japan that is one of the historical ceramics production centers.  This unique design cup is great for any drink - coffee, tea, or even ice cream!

Tea is the most commonly drunk beverage in Japan and an important part of Japanese food culture.  Green tea is the most common type of tea and consumed at any point of the day. Match green tea is also the central element of the Japanese tea ceremony. 

Green tea has a lot of health benefits that you will find in various articles these days.  As well as it's good for your body it also helps you relaxed and appreciate the family tea time after meals.  It's one of the beautiful oriental traditions.

Traditionally, Kutani is known for its bright, five-colored (blue, navy blue, yellow, purple, and red) over-glaze patterns, but today much broader variety of color is used, moreover more ceramists tends to make good use of the soil color itself rather than using the bright colors. 


Process of Kutani-ware


Quarrying Out Stones
quarry out potter's stone
grind the stone into fine earth.
soak the earth in water to remove floating material, such as iron.
Sucking up and Softening
suck up extra water to soften the clay.
remove air inside the clay which causes cracks and strains.
form with potter's wheel.
form with molding.
Drying and Finishing
put pedestal and knob.
finish brim.
Unglazed firing
fire it at 800 degrees centigrade for 8 hours.
Preliminary drawing
draw an outline with "Sometsuke-gosu"
(dark blue paint) made of cobalt oxide.
glaze the surface of pottery.
Glazed firing
fire at 1300 degrees centigrade for more than 15 hours.
draw hairline with Gosu.
paint with five color paints.
fire between 800 and 1000 degrees centigrade.
Firing for gold and silver
paint gold and silver and fire at 400 degrees centigrade.
