Kutani-yaki is a distinctive Japanese porcelain style well known for its vibrant colors and striking designs covering most of the surface area of each piece.
There are some of the defining characteristics of different types of porcelain, such as Ko-Kutani-Fu (old Kutani line), Yoshidaya-Fu (Yoshidaya’s line), Aka-E (red Kutani line), and etc. The Yoshida-Fu ware is also called “Ao-Kutani (Blue Kutani)”. It usually uses the same five colors as Ko-Kutani (old Kutani), with the exception of red. Having a yellow background is also typical. The style of this piece is Yoshidaya’s line with characteristics of yellow background along with the ko-kutani’s five colors. Yoshidaya style is instantly recognizable by many Japanese as Kutani due to its unique color combinations, ‘Yoshida-ya’ is characterized by a base of vivid yellow and bright green, and is named after the biggest, most successful kiln of Edo-period, revival Kokutani (about 180 years ago)..
Most of the Kutani-yaki ware listed in our shop are produced by various prestigious local kilns in Ishikawa.
