When you should drink Japanese green tea
Cold days continue and I feel like having nice hot green tea throughout the day. However I try to remind myself of the timing of enjoying cups of green tea.
Green tea contains large quantity of tannins that is a type of polyphenol that comes from plants. The tannins help boost immunity and provide protection from harmful toxins such as smoke and pollution in the environment. However the tannins tend to be combined with iron and the combination does not get digested easily. Iron is important element of hemoglobin that carries oxygen in your body and lacking of hemoglobin prevent our body from transforming the nutrient into energy. As a result your body would not generate enough heat.
What am I saying? Basically it's important to enjoy your green tea at least 30 minutes after your meal especially in cold days where you want your body to be warmed up. Tannins is also included in coffee and wine so the rule applies to those drinks as well.
There are other types of tea than green tea if you want to drink with your meal. Oolong tea, jasmine tea, or barley tea contain less tannins.
Green tea has a lot of health benefits that you hear everywhere. The tea would be better for your health if you also know how to deal with the shortcomings.
